 Linguistics of emotions: classical and modern approaches

A dictionary entry for emotional says "something relating to your feelings or how you control them". Yet, how often are people being frowned upon for bursting into tears, crying out loud of joy or anger? Why are exposed feelings conceived of as something socially inappropriate? In many cultures, humans are advised to suppress their true emotional reactions as it may be revealed in a classical and everlasting fight of ratio vs emotio. Nonetheless, the archetypal fear of being emotional (be it grievance or indignation, exaltation or fear) is no longer on the agenda of the day when you are aware of all the ins and outs of the matter. Modern approaches to the study of emotions claim to elucidate the importance of emotion in everyday communication to manage various social situations.

Анотація навчальної дисципліни

Курс «Сучасна лінгвістика емоцій: інтегральний підхід» присвячений вивченню засадничих принципів дослідження емоційної комунікації, розвитку умінь і навичок лінгвістичного аналізу емотивної компетенції мовців. У фокусі дисципліни знаходяться когнітивні механізми мовленнєвого творення та вплив різних емоційних станів на синтаксичне оформлення думок і вибір лексичних одиниць. Особлива увага приділяється вербальному втіленню емоційних переживань як на морфологічному, так і синтаксичному рівнях мови. Серед об’єктів вивчення знаходяться вербальні стратегії тематизації емоційних переживань: лейбли емоцій та образне їх вираження, опис емоціогенних ситуацій. Пропонується ознайомлення із поняттям емоційного синтаксису, синтаксичної емфази, а також основними підходами до їх аналізу. До пріоритетних завдань курсу належить розвиток лінгвістичних, загальнонаукових і соціально-особистісних компетенцій студентів у стійкій довгостроковій перспективі. Саме тому, в межах курсу розглядаються базові культурні особливості емоційної мовленнєвої поведінки, поняття емоційного інтелекту, емоційних сценаріїв та правил демонстрації емоційних переживань у англомовних полікультурних дискурсивних практиках.

Module 2. Grammar of emotions. Verbal representation of emotion

Emotion as a type of mental experience may find its representation in language in a number of ways:
  • Labelling emotion;
  • Description of emotion display;
  • Metaphorization of emotional experience;
  • Verbal reporting of emotional experiences and state /action tendencies 
The increase in intensity of emotional experience through the aforementioned ways of emotion reification is substatiated by the nature of linguistic signs - from iconicity and symbolism to indexicality.

Metaphors, if treated as all-pervasive phenomena, are not mere stylistic devices but according to George Lakoff supply "an alternative account in which human experience and understanding, rather than objective truth, plays the central role".

Module 3. Emotive pragmatic intention

Wittgenstein's philosophy of emotions (Gemütsbewegungen) regards the psychology of emotions from the viewpoint of the "surface" and "deep" grammar, where he considers either the description or the experience of the emotions, respectively. Therefore, surface grammar may lack sufficient perspicuity in unveiling true emotional states of the speakers. Classical pragmatic (speech act theory) and modern cognitive pragmatic approaches (the relevance theory) seek to establish the connection between the speaker's demonstrated intention and the audience's inferences of the intention from the provided evidence.

Emotions are recognized to be critical units of everyday activities in different contexts whether you attend an interview, make a presentation or call off a date. To handle all the challenges successfully you need to demonstrate enough level of emotional intelligence by managing your feelings, empathizing with others and building communal networks.

More importantly, emotional intelligence skills are being cultivated in modern schools and are subsequently requested while applying for a job position. Remarkably, the skills of being sympathetic and helpful or staying stress-resistant are all developed through communication.

Our obvious ignorance of  exotic emotion concepts in the cultures of  far-away countries such as  Ifaluk (Micronesia) "song" for very approximate English "anger" doesn't prevent us from failing to discern the relation of an emotion to its wording in the world-known languages. One of the possible ways to explain it is non-translatibility or culture specific expressions for "universal" emotions.  But many a scholar conform it to the linguistic relativity, echoing the Humboldtian romantic viewpoint that "The diversity of languages is not a diversity of signs and sounds but a diversity of views of the world".
