Linguistics of emotions: classical and modern approaches
A dictionary entry for emotional says "something relating to your feelings or how you control them". Yet, how often are people being frowned upon for bursting into tears, crying out loud of joy or anger? Why are exposed feelings conceived of as something socially inappropriate? In many cultures, humans are advised to suppress their true emotional reactions as it may be revealed in a classical and everlasting fight of ratio vs emotio. Nonetheless, the archetypal fear of being emotional (be it grievance or indignation, exaltation or fear) is no longer on the agenda of the day when you are aware of all the ins and outs of the matter. Modern approaches to the study of emotions claim to elucidate the importance of emotion in everyday communication to manage various social situations.|
